Benjamin Echeverria
November 15th - December 20th, 2025
The center incites the possibility of a periphery. Certain motifs—the stripes, the circles, the peoples—perform stability: fixed coordinates around which the painting’s contradictions circulate. This stability is as much in service of establishing a major language as it is in generating its contradiction. Echeverria binds minor languages unto his larger ones; insurgent gestures, in staging their mutiny, simultaneously threaten and regenerate the major language. Every iteration undermines and bolsters the painting’s status as a painting.
What emerges is an archive under ongoing reconstitution, something the artist continues to build even as he chips at its corners. A mark returns altered, or a surrogate repeats a form that ceases to behave like its source object. As the logic becomes legible, one begins to see what is returned to, what is developed, and what is lost for the moment. The digital prints are magnified doubles, which don’t merely reproduce the paintings; they shift the bracket of what constitutes a painting to begin with, undoing the authority they might reinforce. And the space-as-painting, or painting-as-space, refuses to clarify the system; it instead disperses it, pushing the archive outward onto the brink of something completely intactile.
